Hi Again :)

I was thinking of doing a poll, but decided against it because I came to the conclusion that a poll would be under-inclusive.

Basically, I want to ask who is your favorite Iranian figure of all time, and please give me the reason or attributes of that person for making him/her your favorite Iranian of all time.

Some figures, obviously, are Zartosht, Kourosh-e Bozorg, Dariush-e Bozorg, Ferdowsi, Anoushiravan, Saadi, Haafez, Khayyaam, etc.

One Rule: The figure MUST be Iranian!!!

Thanks for your opinions :)

In the original poll that I was going to do, I was planning on putting the following choices, amongst others, to vote on. So I'll just put it here.

(1) Zartohst: the greatest Iranian, for among other reasons, being one of the greatest and earliest human philosophers and thinkers.
(2) Kourosh-e Bozorg: the great Iranian, for among other reasons, being the founder of the Persian Empire, creating the declaration of human rights, and having equality and respect for all.
(3) Ferdowsi: the greatest Iranian, for among other reasons, saving the Persian language and Iranian identity.

I personally choose Ferdowsi. Had it not been for he, we would probably not consider ourselves Persian / Iranian today, we probably would not speak Persian, and we probably would not know our own heritage. Had it not been for him, we may not even give weight or consideration to the first two persons listed above because we probably would not even know about them.

What do you guys think? Who is the greatest? The list is not exclusive to the persons named above!

i would say
OMAR KHAYYAM
being a mathematician, scientist, asrtronomer, philosopher, and a poet some of his major contributions include:
--Jalali Calender which is more accurate than the Julian and almost as accurate as the Gregorian intercalation system.
--contributions to algebra , geometric solutions of cubic equations
--astronomical tables
--and last but not least the Rubaiyat

all iranian figures are to be mentioned because they are what makes our culture and history so outstanding.....
but i chose him cause i did a study on him and he is a really interesting person

No, I haven't forgotten about Reza Shah. I think that he is an amazing person in Iranian history. But I think the ones that I listed, are perhaps greater figures.

In fact, I am reading a book called "Raahe Reza Shah-e Bozorg". It's a 500 page book, and I've only read 55 pages of it so far. Basically, it traces the history from the end of the Qajar era, why and how Reza Shah came to power, and what he accomplished. I will hopefully give an update when I read the book -- but honestly don't anticipate it to be for a long time b/c I don't have too much free time.

On the cover, it lists some of his accomplishments in the map of Iran, and there are so many. To name a few:

(1) Raah Ahan Sartasary (railroads accross iran)
(2) Eejaadeh Amniat (created security)
(3) Capitalism
(4) Ferestandeh Radioee (Radio station)
(5) Honarestaane Dokhtaraan (art academny for girls)
(6) Zob Ahan (creation of metal factories)
(7) Tasis Daadgostary (creation of police station / court)
(8) Shenasnameh (creation of birth certificate / ID)

There are many many more. So he truly was a great man, who saved Iran, and may his soul rest in peace.

my bad. i missed the M. Anyway, with regard to Mohammad Reza, I beleive that he was great also, but I really hope that this thread doesnt turn into what happened in the thread Shah's statements vs. Khoemeinis's statements where it became a bashing match.

I think that Mohammad Reza and Reza Shah are the two greatest kings that Iran has had in the post-Islam era, so they are both in my view great Iranians.

Please only positive remarks in this thread :)

I cant choose just one! lol

Ferdowsi (obvious reasons)

Most of the mythological charactors from the Shahnameh, also the ones who existed, Rostam-e Farokhzad killed by Taazi hordes in the name of Iran

Khayyam... Rubaiyat and his works on Determinism

Reza Shah (AKA Reza Khan) one of the greatest Mazandaranis ever.. not to mention he was one of the greatest shahs we've had for centuries.

Attar, his works...'Mantiq at-Tayr' an alegory comparable to Plato's works imo, influences on Rumi and the sad tale of his death :( he should get aknowledged more in Iran

Cyrus The Great/Kourosh-e-Bozorg... worlds first decree of human rights... truelly proved to be 'civilised' is a way of thought NOT modern surroundings! Also the greatness/father of Persia etc etc

Darius The Great... simply for constructing Parsa lol

Ofcourse the Prophet Zarathushtra and the Prophet Bahaullah... but i wont include religion in this :)

I wont mention the obvious ones ( Cyrus The Great, Darius, Ferdowsi, ....) But I rather want to add the following Persian figures:

kharazmi : some of his contribuation to the world : Algebra, Trigonmetry, Coordinate axies.
Omar Khayyam : He was a poet as well as a mathematician. He compiled astronomical tables and contributed to calendar reform and discovered a geometrical method of solving cubic equations by intersecting a parabola with a circle

Abu raiyhan beeroni : Physist and mathematician

Have a look at this link for the list of Iranian scientists and scholars : http://en.wikipedia....nian_scientists

Greatest Iranian: Mossadegh. For obvious reasons.
And then Ha'fez and Khayyam.
etc. etc.
I'd keep the Rezas out of any list, shame of a nation along with Khomeyni.

My iranian figure of today is :Anoushe Ansari .

---

A US national of Iranian origin could be the first female space tourist and may travel aboard a Russian vessel to the International Space Station (ISS) in 2007, Russia's space agency Roskosmos said.

"We have signed a preliminary contract with (Anoushe) Ansari under which she is training as a back-up for Japanese space tourist Daisuke Enomoto," Alexei Krasnov, in charge of manned space flights, was quoted by ITAR-TASS news agency as saying.

"It's not excluded that she will herself leave for the ISS in spring 2007," Krasnov said.

Ansari, the 38-year-old head of Telecom Technologies in the United States, left Iran when she was 17.

Ansari and Enomoto on Friday toured the Soyuz spacecraft that will take the 34-year-old Japanese Internet entrepreneur to space in September, ITAR-TASS reported.

Enomoto will pay some 20 million dollars (15.7 million euros) to be the fourth space tourist to blast off for the International Space Station.

My iranian figure of today is :Nadia Bjorlin, Persian Swedish Beauty

Nadia's exotic looks are from her mixed Swedish-Persian background. Her father was the Swedish composer and conductor Ulf Björlin (1933-1993). Her mother, Fary, whose background is Persian, is an interior decorator. Nadia speaks Swedish, Farsi, French, Italian, Russian and English .

Nadia appeared on Days of our Lives in the contracted-role of 'Chloe Lane' beginning in November 1999, and her character was placed in the middle of the most heated and contested love triangles on the show (Broe vs. Phloe).

Fereydoun Farokhzad, a poet, a patriotic singer who was Iran's Jay Leno during the time of Shah, was stabbed and was beheaded with a knife on 8th August 1992, in Bonn, Germany during the time of exile from the Islamic Revolution, by the order of the clerical repressive corrupt fanatical regime of IRI.

He was a great Entertainer and trained many great Persian singers currently living in LA. He was someone of whom most people have fond memories growing up in Iran. An educated patriot who fought against the mullahs with all his power and finally was murdered in a tragic way by the mullah regime. Fereydoun was always present during many demonstrations and always spoke loud and clear against the Islamic Republic and he is truly missed and irreplaceable.
